'Artificial' premieres at NYFF: Guadagnino's OpenAI satire called 'savage' and 'terrifying'
Luca Guadagnino says zero AI went into Artificial, his OpenAI film with Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman. It is his own claim, nobody can check it, and the premiere's 'savage' verdicts are first-reaction posts, not reviews.
Luca Guadagnino told The Hollywood Reporter that "zero AI" went into Artificial, his film about OpenAI with Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, and that the same goes for all of his films. "I shoot on 35," he said, then asked how you leave the door open to reality on a set "if you are sending prompts to a computer?"
The film premiered at the New York Film Festival on Monday and opens in US theaters on Dec 25. On X, one repost of the zero AI line drew about 151,500 impressions by Tuesday morning, roughly three times THR's own post.
It is the director's own claim, made on the night Neon launched its Oscar campaign, and nobody outside the production can check it. No audited credit, union definition or festival rule says where "made without AI" starts. Vulture reports Garfield's eyes were painted blue in post, ordinary VFX work that predates generative models, which shows how blurry that line already is. The "savage" and "terrifying" verdicts going around are first-reaction posts from invited press, not reviews.
In practice, disclosure now sells in both directions, so the audience is primed to ask every film what it used. AI filmmakers who publish their process and credit the director, writer and editor before the tools can answer that question before anyone asks it.
