Grimes gave an AI film her face for free, and the tool makers had to unlock it

Grimes voiced and helped design her AI-generated character in Gods Don't Give Gifts, out in US theaters on December 4. Getting her face on screen meant tool makers lifting their blocks on famous faces, and nobody has said which ones agreed.

Grimes plays an AI-generated aristocrat in Zack London's Gods Don't Give Gifts, which opens in US theaters on December 4, and she did it for free. Her consent got her into the film, but getting her face on screen took the companies behind the AI tools switching off their blocks on famous faces, a door most independent creators can't open.

Her face is generated and her voice is not. Grimes recorded her own lines at home in Los Angeles, helped design the character and its mechanical mask, and refused payment, which her spokesperson confirmed to Variety. London, who posts as Gossip Goblin, released the clip on X on Thursday.

IndieWire reported the craft side: the team blended photos into an existing character design and asked the tool makers to lift the filters that stop them generating a public figure. Nobody has named which companies agreed, or on what terms, and what her license covers beyond this film hasn't been published.

The campaign around it needs a closer read. This is the first AI-generated feature with a US theatrical release, not the first in cinemas anywhere, since Sanxingdui: Future Past opened in China on October 23. The studio's 16 million trailer views don't match YouTube, where every upload we found adds up to about 2.75 million, and the push toward nearly 1,000 theaters runs through a booker with no chain deal announced.

Our take: a famous artist working for free is a real endorsement, but the gatekeeper here is the tool maker. Until any creator with a signed release can prove consent and get the same exception, this kind of casting stays with whoever has a studio on the phone.

Grimes gave an AI film her face for free. The models had to be told to allow it

Grimes refused payment, helped design her character and recorded her own voice for Zack London's AI feature, out in US theaters on December 4. IndieWire reports the team had to ask model makers to switch off filters that block famous faces, and the studio's 16 million trailer views don't show up on YouTube.

Grimes has a role in Gods Don't Give Gifts, Zack London's AI-generated film, which opens in US theaters on December 4. Variety reported on Thursday that she licensed her likeness for free, helped design her character and voiced her own lines. London, who posts as Gossip Goblin, released the clip on X the same evening.

For AI creators, the useful detail sat lower down in the coverage. To put a recognizable public figure on screen, the team had to contact the model makers and get them to remove the built-in blocks on generating a famous face, IndieWire reported. Her consent was only half of it. The other half was a vendor willing to switch its guardrail off, which is an arrangement most independent filmmakers can't make. The coverage also repeated two claims that don't hold: a theatrical first and 16 million trailer views.
