Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Tilly Norwood is 'a piece of software'
Joseph Gordon-Levitt argues Tilly Norwood cannot be credited as a performer, only the people who make her can. Particle 6 has not said how Misaligned will bill its crew.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's sharpest point about Tilly Norwood is not that AI actors are bad, it is about the credits. In an Instagram clip posted on 30 September, he called Particle 6's synthetic performer "a piece of software that's being branded as an actress" and set one rule: "In order for someone to give a performance, there has to be a performer."
His comparison was Donald Duck. Nobody says the duck acted; the writers, animators and voice actors who made him get the credit, and he argued "the product known as Tilly Norwood is no different."
Particle 6 is not far from that position on the work itself. Announcing Norwood's first feature, Misaligned, in July, it billed the film as a hybrid production with directors, writers and editors working alongside AI specialists. The open question is how that crew appears on screen, and SAG-AFTRA's 2026 contract already bars producers from using a synthetic performer without bargaining with the union first.
In practice, if your AI short has a recurring synthetic character, credit the people behind it by role, as animation does: character design, writing, voice and animation.
