Meitu's RoboNeo lets AI short-drama makers keep a character and reuse it across new shows

RoboNeo's October 27 update saves an AI drama character's look, personality and voice for reuse in new scripts, memes and spin-offs. Meitu has shared no pricing, model details or usage numbers.

Meitu wants AI drama makers to stop rebuilding their cast for every new show. Its RoboNeo platform shipped an update on October 27 that treats the character, not the episode, as the thing you keep.

The update has three parts. A character portal starts from a rough sketch or a jotted idea and lets you fix the character's look, personality, identity and voice, then link it to storylines. A script workbench breaks writing into steps, from character setup and story concept through to plot, and carries those settings into new stories so the character keeps the same tone. A third tool puts the same character into trend remakes, sticker packs, short videos and new dramas.

The timing follows the numbers. Chinese data firm DataEye counted more than 221,900 new AI short dramas on one social platform in the first half of 2026, and only 1,055 of them passed 100 million views, a hit rate of 0.47%. Industry voices quoted in Chinese press say AI cuts production costs by 80% to 90%, while the cost of promoting each show keeps rising. Sequels already have a track record: ByteDance's Hongguo app says it had released more than 200 sequel dramas by 2025.

The catch is the evidence. All of this comes from Meitu's update notes and Chinese reporters who tried the page. RoboNeo added Kling 4.0 last week, but Meitu has not said which video models power the new tools, has not published pricing for them, and has shared no usage numbers. No creator work made with them is public yet.

Our take: keeping the character is the right bet in a market where almost nothing breaks out, because a recurring face is how a hit earns a second season. Just know the cast you build lives inside RoboNeo.
