Stallone says the AI critics are right, and he'd do it anyway

Asked whether he is a risk-taker, Sylvester Stallone volunteered that he wants a half human, half AI film and conceded the creative community is right to blast him. The tape names no project, the trades trimmed his hedges, and the licensed lane for star likeness he describes already exists.

About 13 minutes into this week's episode of Stick to Football, The Overlap's podcast with Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jill Scott and Ian Wright, one of the hosts asked Sylvester Stallone a question about temperament: "Do you see yourself as a risk-taker?" Stallone said yes, big time, and reached for an example nobody had asked him about: "Uh, for example... Oh, I'll get in trouble for this. AI is here to stay."

What followed lasted under a minute, and by Thursday afternoon it was a headline at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. On tape, Stallone said he had wanted "to do half p- human, half AI, and put it together. And of course everyone's going nuts." He said people "are now selling their image" and that "eventually there, there are, uh, maybe 20 Elvises, avatars." Then came the part that makes this more interesting than another star shrugging at the future: he said he would take the risk "even though you get blasted bombastically from the creative community. And that, they're right. They're right. But we can't stop this, this avalanche."

What he said, and what got tidied

We pulled the full episode audio from the podcast feed (released Thursday 22 October, 74 minutes) and ran a machine transcript, which puts the AI remarks at roughly 13:27 to 14:20. The quotes the trades printed are real. A few edits changed the texture, though.

The setup went missing everywhere. Stallone wasn't asked about AI, about Rambo or about technology. He volunteered it as proof that he still takes risks, which reads less like a policy statement and more like a man who knows the room will push back. The word "maybe" fell out of the Elvis line, so a guess about the future became a forecast of "20 Elvis avatars." And his closing hedge was cut in every write-up we read. Right after "If you don't go with it, you will be trampled by it," he added two words: "I think."

He also named no project, as Variety says plainly. The Hollywood Reporter wrote that he got onto the subject while referencing Lionsgate's John Rambo prequel, but the tape doesn't show that at this point in the conversation. The best documented match is older. In September 2025 he told The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast that he had pitched an AI-assisted young Rambo, and Variety quoted him then: "Everyone thought I was crazy. AI is sophisticated enough to go through Saigon to see him at 18 years old and basically use the same image." That fits "half human, half AI," but he didn't say so this week.

One more correction worth carrying. Some write-ups describe Stallone as not involved in John Rambo, which was true when Deadline reported it in September 2025. By May 2026, Deadline's release-date story listed him as an executive producer on the film, which Jalmari Helander directs with Noah Centineo as the young Rambo for a 4 June 2027 release. He isn't starring, but he does hold an EP credit.

The outrage that isn't on record

Variety's headline says the earlier pitch ignited outrage, so we went looking for it. The September 2025 coverage in Variety, Deadline and The Playlist reported the young Rambo idea without fuss, and we found no union statement, named critic or documented industry backlash from that time. The evidence for the outrage is Stallone's own account: "everyone's going nuts" and "you get blasted." That may well be true in his inbox, but it is his description.

The pushback you can measure is this week's. On X, the THR post about his remarks had drawn 40 quote posts against 105 likes by early Friday, a ratio that usually signals people arguing rather than agreeing. The replies we sampled split between "AI slop" jabs, political digs (Stallone is one of the president's Hollywood special ambassadors, per Deadline) and plain indifference. The episode itself passed 900,000 YouTube views within a day.

The licensed lane he is describing already exists

Strip away the bravado and Stallone is describing a market that is already running, and his line that "people are now selling their image" is literally true. ElevenLabs launched its Iconic Marketplace with Michael Caine in November 2025, offering licensed voices that companies request per project. Elvis Evolution, the immersive London show from Layered Reality, recreated Elvis with AI under rights from Authentic Brands Group, which manages the Elvis estate's commercial rights. Twenty Elvises, if they arrive, will be an estate-licensing story long before they are an open-season one.

That matters for anyone who makes this kind of work. A hybrid performance, real actor plus generated material, is a craft job: de-aging, likeness matching, compositing a human take with synthetic shots so that the seams don't show. When an 80-year-old action star says on a football podcast that he wants one, he is describing demand for exactly those skills. On any union feature it also runs through paperwork, since SAG-AFTRA's current agreement requires separate signed consent before a digital replica is used.

The most honest part of the conversation came about an hour later, in a separate exchange, when a host mentioned his own daughter doing self-tapes. Stallone answered that acting is "the most difficult profession in the world, and it's gonna get more difficult because of AI. I know. My daughter's an actress." He told her: "Please, get into gaming." He didn't name which daughter, and the trades' bracketed name is their assumption.

Our take: Stallone isn't announcing a film, he is telling you where star money wants to go. The critics he concedes are right will be answered by consent and licensing, and the people who can build that hybrid work cleanly are the ones who get hired.
