Junkyard King Chapter 3 is a riveting inter-dimensional romp that is bursting with nostalgia, and it drops a few pop culture references that made us smile (Willow and The Goonies both get a nod). Henry Daubrez (@henry.daubrez) created and directed the 16-minute episode, "The Other Side", which sends Artie, Kai and Socket the crow through a pink gate into Avalon to find a missing girl.

The look lands somewhere between punk manga, anime, early hand-drawn studio animation and a grown-up version of the characters Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of Tank Girl, drew for Gorillaz. The world is rich and layered, with a color palette and wardrobe you would know from a single frame. Artie and Kai feel familiar and novel at once, and we already identify with parts of both of their personalities. The fantasy realm gives the show free agency for wild and wonderful characters, and it does not disappoint.

Then there is the soundtrack, credited to Pink Static. It feels part 90s grunge, part orchestral Final Fantasy battle music, part progressive rock with flavors of Dream Theater and Mick Gordon's DOOM score, and part Prince of Persia, with the Phrygian dominant mode building tension and intrigue. It is a standout piece, and one we will be coming back to watch again.

Daubrez made it with a crew of one and a half in four weeks: he wrote, art directed, edited and handled sound, music and animation, with Julie Wieland on additional visual art and shots. It was made in collaboration with invideo, which supports the compute behind the series.

Pierrick Chevallier brings a K-pop magazine cover to life with MiniMax H3

French VFX artist Pierrick Chevallier fed two K-pop magazine covers into MiniMax H3 and got 15 seconds of type sweeping in front of, behind and around the models, with sound that hits every cut. He has not shared his prompt or said whether the audio is native, and H3's open weights exclude the US and UK.

Two black-and-white K-pop magazine covers side by side, a dark-haired model in a black crop top and a platinum-haired model in white, surrounded by large display type

A black-and-white magazine cover snaps into place. "K-POP ICON DUO" runs down the right edge, a woman with a dark bob stands in a black crop top and leather jacket, and then the type starts to move. Giant letterforms sweep across the frame in front of her, a white flash wipes the page, and a second cover builds itself around a model with a platinum ponytail, an oversized serif S rising behind her in silhouette before every word locks back into the layout.

It lasts 15 seconds. Pierrick Chevallier (@CharaspowerAI), a French VFX artist with about 54,500 followers on X, posted it on Thursday 8 October with one tool in the caption: "Minimax H3 is honestly ridiculous for motion design when the source image already includes typography." It is a stunning bit of motion design, and it feels like the cover and hero spread of a fashion magazine have been brought to life.
